Red Eclipse is a multiplayer first-person shooter in the arena, similar to Cube 2: Sauerbraten, Quake III Arena or Unreal Tournament. A free and open source game
Review
Red Eclipse is an open source arena shooter created using Tesseract and Cube Engine 2 technologies. It offers an innovative parkour system, excellent but powerful weapons and a dynamic accessible gameplay.
Tesseract is a modern engine with a well-established pipeline with real-time dynamic lighting, shadows, HDR, reflection in the screen space and dynamic deformation of the organic model. Tesseract and its predecessors, Cube and Cube 2, are all built from the ground up as open source engines with more permissive licensing than essentially any other available 3D engine.
Gameplay
Red Eclipse offers 5 game modes that can be further customized using mutators.
Game Modes:
- Deathmatch – shoot to kill and increase your score by killing enemies;
- Capture the Flag – capture the enemy’s flag to earn points;
- Defend and Control – defend control points to score points;
- Bomber Ball – The bomb must be delivered to the enemy’s gate before it explodes;
- Race – compete for the fastest lap time;
- And there is also a network cooperative map editing;
- Demo viewer for playing previously recorded matches.
Parkour
Red Eclipse has a parkour system that allows you to navigate the maps in different ways: hop, slide, vault, wall run, dash around a map and gain momentum.
Weapon
In most games, all players are equipped with a pistol and two of their favorite weapons. In addition, explosive weapons such as grenades and mines can be collected in the arena to enhance your offensive abilities.
Teams
Players fight in two randomly assigned teams – Alpha (Blue) and Omega (Red)
Changing teams
In some game modes where teams are present, the server may randomly move some players to the opposing team in case the teams are not balanced.
Friendly fire
Friendly fire is enabled by default. Make sure you don’t hurt your teammates, otherwise you will lose points for both yourself and your team. If you do too much damage to your teammates, you will receive a warning before you are eventually kicked off the server.
Mutators
The gameplay can be further customized using mutators to create unique combinations of game modes.
Examples of mutators: FFA (players fight for themselves) and Instagib (all hits are fatal)
