EncryptPad – free and open source, multi-platform minimalist secure text editor and tool for encrypting and decrypting binary files on disk

Review

  • Support for symmetric encryption;
  • You can protect a text file in two ways: using a password and a file key: both individually and together: a combination of a passphrase and a key file;
  • There is a random file key and password generator;
  • Key repository in a hidden directory in the user’s home folder;
  • Path to a key file can be stored in an encrypted file. If enabled, you do not need to specify the key file every time you open files;
  • You can encrypt binary files (images, videos, archives, etc.);
  • It is possible to set the “read mode” to prevent accidental modification of the file;
  • Support for UTF 8 text encoding;
  • Windows/Unix configurable line endings;
  • Customisable passphrase generator helps create strong random passphrases;
  • File format compatible with OpenPGP;
  • Iterated and salted S2K;
  • Passphrases are not kept in the memory for reuse, only S2K results;
  • Supported encryption algorithms: TripleDES, CAST5, AES, AES192, AES256, Camellia128, Camellia192, Camellia256, Twofish;
  • Supported hashing algorithms: SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-224;
  • Integrity protection: SHA-1;
  • Compression: ZLIB, ZIP, Bzip2;
  • ASCII armor;
  • Large multi-gigabyte files are supported;
  • There is a search and replace;
  • There is scaling;
  • You can change the font family, font size, font style, effects (underlined, strikethrough), and writing system;
  • You can enable/disable word wrap;
  • Support for keyboard shortcuts.
