FreeMind – free and open source software for creating mind map



Review

  • Interface: at the top are the menu and toolbar, to the left there is a panel with icons in the middle there is a region for creating a mind map, at the bottom there is a panel with notes;
  • Support for importing from the format .mm;
  • Support for exporting to formats: PNG, JPEG, XML, HTML, XHTML, OpenDocument Text, SVG и PDF;
  • It is possible to create an encrypted associative map;
  • Tab support: you can work with multiple maps at the same time;
  • It is possible to cancel/repeat actions;
  • Support Drag and Drop, including the possibility to copy nodes or copy style of nodes, dragging and dropping of multiple selected nodes, dropping of texts or list of files from outside;
  • Collaborative editing over the network;
  • There is a search and replace;
  • Spell check support;
  • Fully functional following of HTML links stored in the nodes, be it www links or links to local files;
  • Fast one-click navigation, including folding/unfolding on one click and following links on one click at the same time (you don’t have to make choice between fast following of links and fast fold/unfold);
  • It is possible to show/hide the top toolbar, the panel with icons, the panel with notes;
  • You can apply special effects to nodes – for example, make them blink to attract additional audience attention, or combine several notes into a group using the cloud, giving them priority over the rest (for this purpose, use the Insert – Cloud menu item);
  • File mode enables you to browse the files on your computer, seeing the folder structure as mind map;
  • Preview and print support;
  • Support for custom keyboard shortcuts.

You can edit nodes:

  • by adding an icon;
  • format: select the node type (curve, oval), zoom in/out, bold/italic/strikethrough, select the node color, highlight the node, select the node background color;
  • select the color/type/thickness of the edge;
  • insert image; select the node style.
