GoldenDict is a free and open source multifunctional dictionary search program that supports several dictionary formats (StarDict/Babylon/Lingvo/Dictd/AARD/MDict/SDICT) and online dictionaries

Review

  • GoldenDict uses WebKit for accurate/correct/complete presentation/display of articles: with all formatting, colors, images and links;
  • Support for several dictionary file formats: Babylon (.BGL) files supplemented with images and resources, StarDict dictionaries (.ifo/.dict./.idx/.syn), Dictd dictionary files (.index/.dict(.dz)), ABBYY Lingvo (.dsl), along with abbreviations (dictionary resources can be packed together in a zip file), ABBYY Lingvo audio archives (.lsa/.dat);
  • Support for services: Wikipedia, Wiktionary or any other MediaWiki-based sites to perform search;
  • It is possible to use arbitrary websites as dictionaries using URL templates;
  • It is possible to run arbitrary external programs for audio playback or content generation (text-to-speech conversion, help pages, etc.);
  • Support for searching and listening to pronunciation from forvo.com;
  • There is a Hunspell-based morphological system used to identify words and spelling sentences;
  • It is possible to index arbitrary directories with audio files to search for pronunciation;
  • Full Unicode case, diacritics, punctuation marks, and space folding. This means being able to type words without any accents, correct case, punctuation marks or spaces (for example, typing “Grussen” will result in “grüßen” in German dictionaries);
  • There is a function for scanning pop-ups. A small window will appear with the translation of the word selected from another application;
  • Support for keyboard shortcuts.
