Zim – free and open source, multi-platform graphical text editor for creating wiki pages



Review

Zim can be used to:

  • Keep an archive of notes;
  • Keep a daily or weekly journal;
  • Take notes during meetings or lectures;
  • Organize task lists;
  • Draft blog entries and emails;
  • Do brainstorming.

  • You can create pages and subpages;
  • You can import pages (text files) and export them to HTML, MHTML (Web Page Archive), LaTeX, Markdown (pandoc), and RST (sphinx) formats;
  • You can send it to print or by email;
  • Support for viewing and editing page properties;
  • Zim uses templates when exporting pages. This way you can for example write your website in zim and export it to HTML using the layout and style definition of you choice.

It is possible to change the appearance of the program interface:

  • Switching edit mode to view mode and back;
  • Show/remove toolbar, status bar, sidebars;
  • Full-screen mode and zoom support.

  • Each page can contain links to other pages;
  • You can insert: dates and times, bulleted and numbered lists, checkbox list, horizontal lines, images, attachments, symbols, and links;
  • Formatting: headings (h1-h5), bold, italics, underlined, strikethrough, subscript/superscript;
  • Support for various plugins that provide additional functionality, such as task list Manager, equation editor, system tray icon, version control support, calendar, tag support, spell check, insert charts and graphs, link map, and others;
  • Support for Firefox browser extensions;
  • Autosave – switch between pages without losing content or scroll focus;
  • Support for custom keyboard shortcuts.
